Internships

Last summer, Molly Billmyre '09 interned at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. She collected specimens and performed genetic analysis, investigating mollusks to determine which strains are more tolerant to parasites and thus are more suited to farming. She wants to be a marine animal veterinarian.

Many biology majors choose to pursue internships off-campus that give them additional practical experience. Several agencies of the National Institutes of Health have welcomed Washington College student interns, as has the Kennedy-Krieger Institute in Baltimore. Students interested in careers in health sciences may intern with local doctors and pharmacists; those who complete the College's course in EMT training learn a great deal by volunteering with the local Rescue Squad.

Several internship opportunities are available to students interested in marine biology—the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, UDEL's College of Marine Studies, the Marine Fisheries Division of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Chester River Association's Chester Riverkeeper have all hosted Washington College interns.
